According to a report by the International Diabetes Association, 371 million people worldwide are living with diabetes. Even more startling, the IDA claims that 50 percent of people with diabetes are unaware that they actually have the disease.

Rosalyn D. Summerville Whitaker, a Houston-area entrepreneur, knows all too well the aftermath of being counted as a statistic. Yet, she says being diagnosed wasn't her dilemma – it was not heeding the doctor's advice and taking her diabetes seriously. She has written a book highlighting her experiences, hoping that it will help others living with diabetes.

Although she was told by her doctor that she was diabetic 20 years ago, the trucking and logistics professional said it was only in 2011 that her life took a drastic turn to begin her journey to understand just how frightening diabetes can really be.

Whitaker details her life-threatening experience with diabetes, which includes numerous surgeries over the past year, in her first book, Diabetes, Don't Lose Sight.

She says that although she is currently doing fine, neither she nor her husband, Sammy, dreamed that their lives would change so drastically after leaving Arkansas in 1988. They credit their strong faith in God and his amazing grace as the catalyst which brought them through such a tumultuous period in navigating her diabetes. In keeping with her love for helping people, Whitaker has written Diabetes, Don't Lose Sight as a way to warn and motivate others to take the disease seriously.
